Making Music with MaxForLive

Level: Any // Watch Time: 20min

MaxForLive is an incredibly powerful tool that lets you expand what’s possible with Ableton Live. There are literally 1000s of devices available that do all sorts of things, from simple audio effects to insanely complex sequencers and synthesizers.

With so much available, getting started with MaxForLive can feel a little overwhelming. To help, I’ve started a new video series, ‘Making Music with MaxForLive’ that explores some of the best MaxForLive devices available and how you can use them in your music making.

I’ll kick things off with 5 of my personal favourite devices. Learn more about each one in the videos below and find links to download them above each video.

This will be on ongoing series, with new videos added regularly, so keep an eye out for more ‘Making Music with MaxForLive’ videos in the future.

MDD_____SNAKE

Making music with MIDI is a wonderful thing, and Live’s MIDI Editor gives you a ton of flexibility for creating musical parts, but sometimes you need something a little different to get fresh ideas flowing.

In the realm of hardware music-making, sequencers reign supreme and they present a slightly different approach to programming patterns. We can access these kinds of tools using many of the awesome MaxForLive sequencers available.

In this video, I focus on one of my personal favourites, the free MDD_____SNAKE device.

ml.distance

When mixing, if you want to make an element feel further away from the listener you might reach for the volume fader and turn that element down in the mix. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this, it doesn’t paint a completely accurate picture.

In reality, as an object moves further away from you, you also tend to hear less high frequencies, not just a drop in volume. Enter ml.distance, a free MaxForLive device that emulates the effects of distance.

Palmas

Claps are an essential rhythmic element of many different genres including Hip Hop, RnB, House and even Pop and Rock. They often function in the same way as a snare drum, playing on the backbeat of a groove.

I don’t know about you, but I love a good clap sound, so I was super excited when I came across the mysterious Palmas MaxForLive device, by SufiPlugIns.
